On the first day of March Bulgarians exchange and wear white and red martenitsa and hope that it will make the winter pass faster and bring spring. Martenitsa are always given as gifts. They are worn on clothing until the wearer sees a stork, a swallow or a blossoming tree,and then removes the Martenitsa and hangs it on a blossoming tree.
